Sailing: 14 September 2023
Ship: Avalon Saigon

HIGHLIGHTS

1 Spa & Facilities: I was thoroughly impressed by the amenities offered aboard this gorgeous vessel. Each bathroom was thoughtfully stocked with l’Occitane products, and the water provided is potable after undergoing multiple filtration processes onboard. Although filtered water bubblers are readily available throughout the ship, Avalon also provides reusable water bottles to promote sustainable practices.

The spa experience was exceptional, with highly skilled staff proficient in all aspects of the spa menu – I can attest to this, having tried most of the offerings myself!

2 Food. The culinary offerings onboard are influenced by local Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisines with a hint of Western flair. For example, there’s always a pho available at lunch and dinners. Additionally, the ship boasts an exceptional Western menu, featuring the best kitchen-to-plate burgers at sea! (And I’ve had my fair share of burgers, so that’s saying something!)

3 Camera Ready! Avalon Saigon, closely resembling its counterpart Avalon Siem Reap, features a reduced height and flat roof, making navigating under bridges and power lines a breeze, that would usually pose constraints for many other ships. This unique design grants access to cruise routes to and from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s capital city. As a result, travellers can enjoy seamless pre and post-cruise stays, reducing the need for extended travel times on tour buses to access the city (which is usually a 4 hour trip!)

4 Footwear: Prioritise comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions and local exploration. To moderate potential biosecurity risks from dirt, contemplate packing rubber or quick-drying footwear. Keep in mind that staff will wash the soles of your shoes after every remote excursion, and occasionally your entire shoes, which could hinder drying time before the next excursion.

5 Pack Wisely. Before travelling ensure to review the weather forecast for your travel dates and pack accordingly. Given the tropical climate, it is advisable to bring lightweight, breathable clothing.

Additionally, consider including umbrellas or waterproof lightweight jackets to prepare for fluctuating daily weather conditions. Handheld or electric fans are also highly recommended to combat the intense heat from the sun.

6 Gifts for Orphanages: Avalon supports English classes and education in remote villages by funding teachers and schools, often making them the sole cruise company visiting these areas. Consider supporting the community directly by donating gifts through local schools and orphanages. If you decide to give, prioritise useful items such as school supplies or clothing. I also suggest consulting your Cruise Director for impactful contributions, as they frequently visit these remote areas and understand what gifts would be most beneficial to the community. During our visit, we brought writing books, pens, and coloured markers, which the children and teachers greatly appreciated!

7 Currency & Tipping.  Remember to bring local currency for small purchases and gratuities, as not all facilities accept credit cards. Finding ATMs outside major cities was challenging at times. Please note that spa treatments and gratuities are not included in the cruise fare. Avalon recommends tip rates of USD $7 to $9 per person per day for the cruise director and USD $10 to $12 per person per day for the crew. You can prepay tips with a credit card before the cruise or settle them in cash afterward. Guests are welcome to tip more than the suggested amounts for exceptional service, of course!

8 Respect Local Customs. Be aware of and respectful towards local customs and traditions. It is recommended to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites ensure to cover shoulders and knees!

9 Considerations for Guests with Limited Mobility. Guests should be aware that the ship and shore excursions may not be fully accessible for those with mobility challenges or requiring wheelchairs. The vessel does not have elevator or accessible cabins, and some visited villages may have uneven roads.
